Where are photos of persons kept?

Where are the photos of each person kept? 

a) Within the SQL database

b) In a folder on the server (where is the location of the folder?)

c) Other

I want to know as, if the answer is (a), then the database file size will be substantially bigger.

    By default, photos and all other file-based content other than media files (audio/video) are stored in the database.
    However, if you are concerned about database size, you can configure these items to be stored in the filte system at a location of your choosing.

    To change the storage location for a file type, select "Home/General Settings/File Types".
