The Problem:
I've been thinking about what's missing in Event Registrations when it comes to the ability for me to set the pricing how our ministries request it and there are two pricing structures that we have trouble configuring:
The current solution is to use Discount Codes with specific dollar amount discounts based on the number of registrants. This is not a good solution, primarily because it's using the Discount Codes in a way they were not designed to be used, but also because the math doesn't always divide into even dollar amounts (which looks tacky when we charge someone a couple cents more or less than we said). It also makes it so we can't use actual Discount Codes on the registration.
My Proposed Solution:
Take the current Discount Codes and make them one "type" of Discount (e.g. a Discount entity with a DiscountType enumeration). There could be DiscountTypes of "Discount Code", "Max Cost", and "Number of Participants", with logic that applied the appropriate discount amount based on the configuration.
I would also like to see the current logic, which applies the first valid discount and ignores the rest, replaced with an option on the Discount that determines whether it is allowed to combine with other discounts. If allowed, the logic would continue down the list to look for other valid discounts. This would, for example, let a family who met the max kids also be able to use a 50% off scholarship code.
I believe this setup would greatly increase the flexibility of Rock Event Registration costs with a minimal impact on the UI/logic of the block.
