Workflow reminder

Can someone please share the way your are sending out reminders to staff that they have an open workflow? I am trying to decide where this should go in our workflow process.  We have a few workflows where we would like to add sending a reminder on open workflows.

    I've done this in a number of workflows. Basically, I have an Activity in the workflow that Delays for a period of time (usually 1440 minutes - one day), then does a series of checks to see if I need to perform some action (send a reminder email, for example), then performs that actions if the checks pass. At the end, the Activity simply completed and re-fires itself, starting the Delay-Check-Act cycle over.
