Recording a month date mm/yy rather than a full date

I see the date attributes has options to specify the date format. Is it possible using this to record just the month and year of the event as opposed to the full date?

Editing the current field type to allow for MM/YY would cause several issues. Probably would be better to have a new field type. You might add something to the 'Black Book' with the suggestion. Be sure to include some examples of where it could be used. Thanks!
