Event Registration Check In

I have read through the event calendar guide, it says that groups can enable event check-in. How does this tie in to check in? Has anyone tried this?

While I haven't looked at the specifics yet, my current understanding is that an event can optionally place registrants into a group (that you've previously defined) and you simply enable check-in on that group type with a schedule corresponding to the event date(s). At least I *think* that's how it works.
