Sending Bulk email

Hi,

What is the best way to send bulk email?  Do we need to add members to a group when adding them to the RockRMS database, so that we can select that group to send email to?  If so, is there a way to be able to add member to a default group automatically?  If not can this be a feature request? :-)

Thank you.

    Hi Keith,

If you intend to send an "all church" (or perhaps better stated as "all database") bulk email without the need to setup a Group, consider Data Views.

There should be a couple "Foundational" Data Views available as part of the default install found under Rock - Tools - Data Views.  Among them are "Adult Members and Attendees" which selects active individiuals who have a specific member status and are 18+ years old.

Not to go too far on a tangent - but the Reporting docs are coming soon, and will outline some of the really cool features of RockRMS reporting.  One of my favorites is that Data Views will "stack."  For example, a Foundational View may be a basic building block that defines "who generally would receive any communications from our church."  That data view would be used as a basis for the new data view of "males between 18-24" and perhaps another for "males between 25 and 34" and so on.   In this manner, if the ministry rules defining "who" changes, you need only update the Foundational View which, in turn, ensures the results for all other views are up to date.

    I hope that helps,

I am assuming by bulk email you are planning to message everyone in your database. If that's the case the easiest way of I know to do it is to create a dataview that will propagate a list of everyone. Maybe have is search for any email address that contains an @ sign.

i don't know of a way to auto add people to a group (but I believe there was talk of being able to draw a geofence in the future that will add people to a group). I should put out a disclaimer that I avoid groups because no one keeps them up to date in our current chms.

Thank you. That is why I recommend adding people automatically to at least the user or member group. That way you can at least send Church wide email.

Does that mean that you do not use RockRMS to send bulk email? If not, then how do you do it?

    Thank you Jeremy,

Will we be able to create our own data views soon?

What is the best way to email a group?  We tried the other day but it failed.

I was able to send email to a group. Look at the question "Email Warning about not having an active transport configured." for the solution. Thanks.
